COPYRIGHT NOTICE
The images and text on this site are protected by international copyright law. Unless otherwise noted, reproduction rights belong solely to me, Paul Raphaelson.
If you own a print of the work, you own the object but not the copyright. You still need permission to reproduce the work, physically or digitally.
Copyright protection is automatically extended to a work upon its creation. The photographs on this site have also been registered with the US Copyright Office. Registration adds additional protections, including the copyright holder’s right to seek statutory damages in cases of willful infringement.
Licensing
If you would like to use work from this site for commercial purposes, we need to negotiate a licensing agreement, under which you’ll purchase limited rights to use images for your project. Fees are based on many factors, including the scope of the project, the type of project, and the length of time the images will be used. Please contact me with as many details as possible, including the total media buy.
Linking and Citation
I publish this site with hope that it will be a public resource, not just a marketing tool. In this spirit, I give everyone permission to link to images or cite text in social media, blogs, or online editorial channels—provided that you attribute the work to me, and provide a link to this site. Just be reasonable: hot-link an image or two or three, but not a whole body of work. Write to me if you’re not sure.
This permission does not include using images in print, in commercial or political applications, or as part of the visual identity of a website, product, service, or anything else.
Fair Use and Education
I’m happy to see this site’s content used in educational materials, as long as it’s properly attributed, and as long as students are not charged beyond reproduction costs.
Fair Use and Derivative Works
If you’re an artist who wants to use one of my photographs as a component of a new work, please talk to me. I’m open-minded about this kind of thing and am interested in participating in projects outside my usual turf.
3rd Party Content
The Media page contains texts that I don’t own. Rights to essays / articles belong to the respective authors or publications. I’ve reproduced the texts either by permission or under Fair Use; if you would like to use any of them, contact the publications. Rights to interviews belong jointly to me and the interviewers or publications. The law is less clear here; assume that the answers belong to me, with limited rights granted to the publication. Assume that the published edit of the interview belongs to the publication.
